Friends - I am new to the small tractor world and having a tough time getting good information about the differences between various machines. I'm hoping that some of you can help out with thoughts/ideas. I have 11 acres that needs a lot of work to recover from some not very thoughtful logging. We are building a log house and want to use the tractor to help move logs, in addition to the general landscaping/clearing work. I need a loader and something capable of running a small backhoe, although I probably won't be able to afford the hoe for a while yet. In my area there are presently ads for the following tractors for sale: Kubota 6000, Massey Furguson 35hp, Allis-Chalmers D14, Ford 5000, Ford 2110, Ford 3800, Ford 515, Ford 9n and 8n, JD 2840 and Kubota B1550. I would like to spend approx. $3500, so I don't have very grandious expectations. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I hear you need a pretty big tractor to move logs, especially if the land is hilly. Maybe others who have experience with this will respond with size/HP suggestions. Two options for a reference book you can use to figure out specs for makes/models you find in classifieds:1. Intertec's Used Tractor Price Guide. For about $13, gives model, used value, engine specs, gvw for most major tractors sold in the us since 1939.2. Heartland's Farm Equipment Guide includes a MUCH greater range of equipment and more manufacturers. Serial number location and how to determine model year is also included. Used values not given for all years. -Ken ....

I have a John Deere 4200 gear that I use to move logs. Its 26hp and what I do is put a draw bar in the bottom 3pt. hitch. That way i can attach a clevis and hook a chain to the log. When dragging the log, I raise trhe 3pt hitch a little, this allows the log to pass over obstacles and its much easier on the tractor. The lift capacity for the 3pt. hitch is approx. 1500 lbs. ....
